Why an AI Center for Protein Dynamics?

It is not an exaggeration that scientists throughout history proclaimed their epoch the most revolutionary. Indeed, a contemporary middle-aged scientist, such as the one narrating here, has witnessed many scientific revolutions such as PCR, genome sequencing, and CRISPR technology... not to forget, the internet has made this declaration many times over. But there is little doubt that the dawn of a robust thinking machine, which we have witnessed in the last few years, begets the declaration that this epoch is the greatest of them all and that it is a blessing to be alive now.


The Center for Applied AI in Protein Dynamics is a newly inaugurated initiative at Vanderbilt University. The Center seeks to harness the revolution in machine learning methods to decipher the molecular principles that underpin protein dynamics. Protein dynamics is fundamental to biology. Proteins change their shape to accomplish their biological functions. Deciphering this code is then essential to understand life.


We are in the building phase, as this website will reflect in the next year or so. The Center will recruit young scientists with AI/machine learning training. We seek to have a transformative impact on campus by providing the depth of expertise to complement the various strengths in experimental protein science at Vanderbilt University.
